Located in the heart of Carrboro, North Carolina, Thai Station stands out as a unique culinary gem that draws in visitors from all over. Nestled within the historic district of Carrboro, the restaurant is not only a place to enjoy delicious Thai cuisine but also a destination steeped in local history. The establishment is aptly named for its distinctive location at the former train station, which adds a charming and nostalgic element to the dining experience.

What makes Thai Station particularly special is its innovative use of space; the restaurant is creatively situated within two actual historic train cars that have been transformed into cozy dining areas. This unique setup allows patrons to immerse themselves in a one-of-a-kind atmosphere that blends the allure of vintage rail travel with the rich flavors of Thai cooking.
Most of the seating is accommodated inside these two converted train cars, where diners can savor their meals while surrounded by the charming decor. In addition to the seating within the train cars, there is a limited but thoughtfully arranged seating area located in the portion between the two cars, providing additional options for guests.
The combination of the historic location, the unique dining environment, and the tantalizing menu offerings makes Thai Station a must-visit for both locals and tourists. The restaurant not only serves a variety of traditional Thai dishes that are bursting with flavor but also creates a memorable dining experience that is enhanced by the surrounding history and the story of the train cars themselves.
Parking:
The actual parking lot for Thai Station is very small, with only one labeled handicap accessible parking spot located toward the street side of the parking area. The parking lot adjacent to Thai Station is limited to only those visiting the Weaver Street Shops next door. Please following the parking signs as to not get ticketed or towed while enjoying Thai Station.
We visited mid-day during the week and had to park a couple blocks away and walk to the restaurant.
Entry:
Thai Station has a ramped entry (Approx. 8.75% grade) with handrails on the left side. Once up the ramp, there are two pull-to enter doors, with only the one on the left used for entry. Once inside, the restaurant features a level entry with a ramp at the back of the main dining area to the train car on the left and a small entry door to the train car on the right.
Keep in mind, these are historic train cars, and the doorway width may limit the passage of larger mobility devices.
Also be mindful, that the flooring surface does change throughout the restaurant, many of the surfaces are variable, including low-pile carpet.
Seating:
In the dining area between the two train cars, Thai Station features several lower-height tables along with high-tops with wooden chairs. Inside the train cars seats are booth-style and require maneuvering through the narrow passageway of the historic train car.

Restroom Facilities:
The restrooms at Thai Station are located in the train car on the left via two entrances. The first entrance is located just past the hostess counter and requires ascending two stairs and also opening a pull to enter door. If you continue through the restaurant, there will be a ramp located on the left-hand side. Follow this ramp up and turn to the left to reach the gender designated restrooms. Again, please keep in mind this is a historic building, hallways and doorways may not accommodate all mobility devices.
Restrooms are equipped with a handrail behind the toilet and on the left-hand side
Menu Highlights:
The menu at Thai Station includes vibrant color photos for each dish, presented in a book-style format. They also provide the option for online ordering for pick-up, which might suit your needs better.
We began our meal with vegetable spring rolls. The affordable price and smaller portion of this appetizer allow you to save room for the incredible Thai dishes ahead, while still getting a taste of your favorites!

After visiting Thailand, my absolute favorite dish is Khao Soi, which is often hard to find at Thai restaurants in the U.S. However, this is not an issue at Thai Station. They not only serve Khao Soi, but you can choose your preferred meat, enjoy a good spice level, and appreciate its beautiful presentation. We also savored the drunken noodles, both of which were served with miso soup following the appetizer.
